Useful little things

Twenty seconds well spent

The serious bit in a silly website: a straightforward reminder after using the toilet.

A reminder, not a product pitch

The CDC recommends washing hands after using the toilet. Its everyday guidance is about soap and clean running water, not buying an elaborate bathroom gadget. Keep those basics easy to find and easy to use.

The basic sequence

Wet your hands, apply soap and make a lather. Scrub for at least 20 seconds, including the backs of your hands, between fingers and under nails. Rinse, then dry with a clean towel or an air dryer. The source below gives the complete guidance.

Do not make it a race

Twenty seconds is the scrubbing step, not a target for the entire visit. A jokey sign can make a reminder friendly, but it should not undermine the practical instruction. If you use our sign studio, put the useful message in the smaller line and keep the joke in the headline.

Design the reminder around the room

Place a readable sign where someone will see it without having to move belongings or stand in the doorway. The online studio has a high-contrast style and a plain option. Print at actual size and inspect it in the intended place before hanging it.

A towel has a job

A beautiful towel is of limited use if nobody knows whether it is for decoration or drying. Make the hand-drying option obvious and change or launder reusable towels as appropriate for your household. Follow guidance for your setting if this is a workplace or shared public space.

Keep health questions with health professionals

Our quizzes and comic certificates are entertainment. They do not assess symptoms, hydration, urinary health or suitability for a medical condition. This page sticks to a general handwashing reminder and a clearly identified public-health source.
